Facelifts can dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin, especially in the lower half of the face. Unfortunately, some patients undergo the procedure with false hopes and impossible expectations. Here are some of the most common myths about the facelift procedure, along with the truth of the matter.

Myth: All facelifts are the same

Fact: There is the traditional type of facelift, which produces very dramatic results. There is also the less invasive "mini" lift, also known as "weekend" lift. These procedures are better for patients who want a mild to moderate improvement with minimal downtime. Traditional facelifts are recommended for patients with deep wrinkles and saggy, excess skin on the face and jaw line.

Myth: Facelifts are only available to the rich

Fact: The average standard facelift costs $8,000, but the price can range from $6,000 to $15,000 depending on the extent of the work done. While insurance does not cover the cost of facelift surgery, it's possible to finance the procedure through your surgery center or through a health credit account such as Care Credit.

Myth: A facelift will make you look 18 again

Fact: People pay billions of dollars each year in an attempt to hang on to their youth. While a facelift will not make you look like a teen again, the procedure does dramatically rejuvenate the appearance and help patients regain their self-confidence.

Myth: You'd have to be very vain to consider a facelift

Fact: People have facelifts for various reasons, not all of which have to do with vanity. Youth is a hot commodity, so some people have facelifts to have an advantage in the job market. Others simply don't want to be perceived as tired and grouchy. Still others find that their aged appearance has wreaked havoc on their self-esteem, so they undergo facelift surgery to regain their confidence.

Myth: Facelifts have a long and painful recovery period

Fact: Most patients can return to work within 10 to 14 days. Patients who had an endoscopic facelift have virtually no downtime following the procedure, but they may be prohibited from certain activities (like using a sauna or a hairdryer) for a longer period of time. Pain and swelling are a normal side-effect of facelift surgery, but these can be controlled through pain medication and adherence to post-surgical instructions.

Myth: A Facelift is the best procedure for facial rejuvenation

Fact: Although a facelift is the best facial rejuvenation choice in many cases, this is not always the case. Sometimes, a patient would benefit more from a brow lift, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, or even BOTOX® Cosmetic injections or other skin care treatment. It is important to discuss your needs with your cosmetic surgeon to better determine which procedure is right for you.
